There's no doubt that children love to play outdoors, no matter what the weather. In many cases, the toys in their bedroom are just not suitable for play in the backyard. Whether fragile, electrical or just containing many small parts (which are invariably lost), outdoor toys need to fulfill a completely different need.

From a very early age, playing outside means both physical activity and group play usually involving other kids of the same age. Since space is usually not a problem, providing age appropriate toys that are educational, encourage exercise and can include your child's friends are ideal. Don't forget to include toys that offer individual play as well, such as bicycles, riding toys, etc., for when the friends go home.

For younger children, start with a colorful playhouse, preferably designed around a favorite cartoon character. An especially fun toy for the garden is a sandbox or sandpit - your kids will spend hours playing there! These and others such as small slides, swings and climbing toys are usually made of a high-quality, non-toxic plastic that will last for years outdoors in any weather. Smoky and Little Tykes are two name brands that specialize in backyard toys for youngsters, and are relatively inexpensive.

As the kids grow older and start school, prefab climbing toys with a variety of built-in swings, slides, ropes and other features will not only provide hours of fun, but will help to develop their physical coordination and balance. It's also a good time to introduce seasonal appropriate sports equipment such as football, baseball, basketball and others to play with. Running, jumping and climbing, your son or daughter will get a lot of exercise, burn off their excess energy and be healthier!

For older children, nothing beats a trampoline for outdoor fun. If you don't mind your backyard being the center of the neighborhood, buy a good quality unit and provide adequate supervision for safety. Other gym equipment like hurdles, parallel bars and so on can also help to develop a healthy sense of competition among really active pre-teens.

In the winter, if you live in a snow belt, don't forget to provide a variety of sleds for downhill excitement. Skates, skis and other winter toys are ideal for teenagers to keep them physically active during the cold season. Conversely, during the summer months, even camping equipment for the backyard makes for a lot of fun. No matter what your child's age, providing suitable outdoor toys will benefit them in many different ways!

There are many different vices children have these days when thinking of items to occupy their minds and bodies We have gone from a simple world to a place where electronic devices such as MP3 players, game consoles and portable entertainment devices are a necessity instead of luxuries. Not only is this keeping our children from remaining active outdoors, but also limiting their social skills by keeping them segregated from other children in the neighbourhood that they would otherwise interact with on a regular basis.

Being outdoors is an essential part of life, whether you are a child or an adult. Fresh air, sunshine and regular activity is all part of a balanced lifestyle no matter what age you are. Our society these days has seem to have lost its desire for personal interaction from face-to-face contact such as visiting neighbours and playing cards, going for bike rides with friends down the street or even volunteering in our communities.

Outdoor toys such as trampolines and climbing apparatuses are age-old tools that have been around for many years and enjoyed by an assortment of generations. These wonderful recreational devices have promoted not only physical health but also friendships with children in the neighbourhood who are keen on coming over to play and spend time interacting.

There are a variety of climbing structures available for purchase that range in price dependent on their size and manufactured materials. Some climbing toys have built-in playhouses, rope ladders or bridges, and even incorporated slides. One popular style of outdoor climbing frames is made with wood. Wood is durable, pre-treated and can be left outdoors all year long without any significant damage to the play set. Some play structures are made with a durable plastic material but they do need to be disassembled and stored during the winter months to avoid weather damage.

Trampolines come in a number of sizes and styles compared to the types of trampolines that our parents and kids before us were exposed to. These days trampolines are very common throughout backyards with school-aged children. With much focus on childhood safety and preventative measures with trampolines, you are able to purchase an enclosure screen for your trampoline in order to avoid any unnecessary injuries that may be caused during the time your children are using this device.

There is no better way to encourage your child's physical health than to purchase an outdoor play structure or trampolines so that they are tempted to spend their spare time outdoors having fun rather than inside sitting and watching television or playing their computer games and eating unhealthy snacks. Obesity is one of the major causes of childhood diabetes and typically leads to obesity in adulthood. Once your child has grown and weight control is an issue, it can be a more serious problem when they are adults than trying to promote good physical health earlier on in life.

For more information on trampolines and how they benefit all ages, see our site at http://www.uktrampolines.co.uk

Hamsters are fantastic pets for children because they are so energetic and keen to play. They are also relatively easy to care for, and can really teach children a lot about raising an animal.

Because they are so alert and lively, it is important that you give your hamsters sufficient toys to play with, so that they can exercise both their bodies and their minds. Here are the 3 most popular types of toys, and why each is important:

1. A Running Wheel

In the wild, hamsters are known to explore several miles every night in their search for food. Caged hamsters are just as active, and need a way to expel all of this energy. A running wheel is the perfect solution, because it allows your pet to do exactly what it would do in the wild without needing lots of space.

2. Houses and Tunnels

As active as they are, hamsters sometimes feel the need to hide away and have a little alone time. For this reason, it's essential to give them somewhere to go when they want to be on their own. Houses and tunnels provide great places for them to go for a bit of solitude.

3. Climbing Toys

Another thing that these little creatures love to do is to climb. You may find that your hamster develops a habit of climbing its cage bars. This is great, but you can make it even more enjoyable by giving them a selection of ladders, platforms, and ropes to explore.

By providing your hamsters with a good selection of toys, they will be able to live even more active and enjoyable lives. Not only does this benefit them and their health, but it also makes them more likely to want to play - which is one of the reasons kids love them so much!

Paul has owned dozens of hamsters over the years, and absolutely loves their energy and adventurous spirit. He recommends giving your pets a large hamster cage to explore, such as a fanastic castle hamster cage.

If you've been thinking about the best toys for 18 month old kids remember children are absolute sponges when it comes to learning. When you think about all of the major milestones they learn in their first two years of life it really is amazing. Toys are an integral part of that learning process and foster development in your child. The right toys at the right time will bring a lot of joy.

18 month old children are really at a very unique age. They are still babies in many senses of the word but they are also beginning to exhibit some very independent behavior. By this age there are certain things you can use as a base to see that a child is developing normally, or identify when they may not be and seek professional advice.

What they can and can't do with simple toys and objects is a great indicator for parents and care givers. We may not have a handbook on parenting but there are a solid set of measures used to see your 18 month old has normal development.

Types of Development

Children develop in a few ways as they grow. Here are the major areas:

* Social Skills- how they might act socially and interact with people around them. This can be family, friends, other children, child care providers, and strangers. How they understand and respond to the emotions of others is another important social skill.

* Gross Motor Skills- Take in the major muscle groups that are used to walk, run, sit, stand etc. All of these things they will learn by the age of 18 months. There's also keeping balance, climbing and moving from one position to another.

* Fine Motor Skills - These include the smaller movement and many hand-eye coordination activities. Using the hands to eat, writing, drawing, get dressed, catch a ball etc.

* Cognitive Skills - This encompasses the brain activities of thinking, memory, problem solving, and reasoning (if you leave the room you are still there and will be back, for example). You could say that all developmental skills rely on the cognitive.

* Language Skills - This area includes not only speech but the body language and gestures in communication with others. It is clear that babies understand a lot more than they can speak to us about and they have many ways of letting us know there needs without speech.

What Should An 18 Month Old Be Capable Of?

Remember that all children can learn differently and thrive in some areas. But there are some ways to ascertain what is known as a normal development for an 18 month old. Once you can understand each of the developmental skill categories and where the average 18 month old should be, then you begin to see clearly which toys are going to be the best for them to learn with.

Toys designed to fulfill their learning needs will keep them satisfied, and advancing normally in their learning journey. The following is a guide and not by any means an exhaustive list, nor meant as professional advice. The list will help you to buy the right toy for this age group.

Motor Skills -Both Gross and Fine

* Enjoys pushing, pulling and dumping things

* Runs with rigid movements and can keep eyes on the ground

* Can turn book pages

* Can stack two blocks on top of each other

* Can remove hats, socks, mittens etc

* Scribbles with crayons and thick pencils

* Walks unaided with good balance

Cognitive Skills

* Identifies an object in a book

* Can laugh at actions they see as funny (using a box as a hat for example)

* Knows something out of sight is still there and looks for it

* Can fit objects the correct shape together (square lid onto a square box)

* Does problem solving which involves trial and error

* Can understand and follow simple directions with one step

Social and Language Skills

* Can seem a little selfish

* Will compete with other children for the toys

* Like to play alone on the floor with toys

* May still be anxious when separating from parents

* Actively looks for attention

* Can use eight to ten words that are said clearly

* Points to objects and uses one word descriptions

* Can play pretend games with adult

* Draw your attention to an object or to an action

* Can place words like Bye, Hi, Please and remembers to use them when prompted

* Can communicate frustration and make a protest

* Will ask for mum or dad in a specific manner

* Can recognize themselves in a mirror or in photographs

Best Toys for the 18 Month Old Child

So now a good picture of educational and developmental toys becomes apparent. With not too much trouble there are many choices available in toys and they don't have to cost the earth. Just be sure they are sturdy and safe as they are likely to take some banging and crashing together quite often.

Here are a few that come to mind:

* Large blocks

* Toys with wheels that can be pushed and pulled

* Simple hide and seek games

* Shape puzzles and games

* Dolls and soft toys

* Sturdy and colorful books

* Low climbing toys

* Crayons ( but protect your walls)

* Simple dress ups

* Basic role play (kitchen sets, tea party, shops)

* Simple puzzle and problem solving games and activities

Being 18 months old puts your child right into the middle of the toddler toys in the 1-3 years age group. Look for toys by Playskool and Little Tikes.

Children today do not get enough exercise and it shows in the childhood obesity rates that increase each year. With fast-food diets and little to no exercise, children are doomed to follow the path of being overweight and developing diabetes later on in life, as well as many other health problems that are directly related to weight control issues.

With fast-food drive-thrus, TV dinners, and the lack of daily exercise, children are suffering for our lazy choices in their lives. Computers and game consoles are now used to occupy their time with games and learning tools, and although these are fantastic ways to help kids concentrate and develop their mind skills, their bodies are not getting the exercise they need each day. Is the trade-off really worth it for them?

Outdoor toys are a great way to not only promote physical activity for your children, but also helps to get them outdoors in the fresh air where they can get their daily amount of Vitamin D that is highly needed for growing bodies. Having outdoor toys that capture the mind of your children, and maybe even the hearts and minds of those children in your neighbourhood, will instil a good foundation of exercise that is desperately needed especially in today's instant-gratification world.

Climbing frames are built a number of different ways and are manufactured with a variety of assorted materials. Depending on what you are looking for and the amount of space you have in your backyard for your new outdoor climbing structure, you should be able to find one that will you suit just fine. Many of these outdoor structures incorporate an assortment of different features to stimulate coordination, balance and agility for children. With extras such as rope ladders or bridges, slides, changes in elevation for the variety of walkways, there is no end to the amount of add-ons that could entertain your children for years to come.

One of the most popular types of outdoor climbing structures for children is made of wood. They are typically the best type for sturdiness, ease of cleaning and storage. Many of these outdoor apparatuses can be purchased in parts and you can piece them all together all at once or one at a time as you obtain them throughout the course of a few years. No matter how you plan on purchasing your outdoor structure, your children will benefit from it immediately.

Smaller climbing frames made of hard durable plastic are typically made for very young children such as toddlers and pre-school aged children. These types of play structures are quite small in size and can be used both indoors and outdoors. They are easy to clean and very easy to put together and take apart for storage or to move to another location.

Try to find out as much information as you can before making your final purchase for your outdoor play structure such as climbing frames, playhouses and trampolines. You will want to be sure that the style and model you are getting will suit your children for years to come and make it well worth your while to invest in a larger purchase for your backyard.

Maxie is your classic "Tom Cat"...rangy...he hunts...he gets into a friendly scrape with other cats, eats, sleeps, cuddles and essentially does what he wants to. But, if you want Maxie The Cat to stay home, or to keep other pusses from wandering into Max's territory what should you do? One solution, perfectly matched to Max's nature, is the next breed of cat containment fence ideas.

How Can A Cat Fence Contain Hard-Wired Climbers? Claws, fangs and an over-supply of fast twitch muscles and elongated tendons and ligaments make Maxie The Cat the supreme runner-jumper-climber. Since Max can climb virtually anything, how can cat fencing work to neutralize his overwhelming natural instincts? It turns out that cat kingdom representative, Maxie, conceptualizes climbing in part as a physical I-can-do-this...so long as what I climb on appears sturdy. Enter the mesh nylon fabric see-through fluttering cat fencing solution!

What does Maxie see...and why won't he climb the cat fence? The cat fencing fabric looks unstable, and doesn't offer up a clear jump-and-hold tactile surface. Result? Maxie "quits", and cannot overcome his natural instinct to test the cat fence.

Creating Happier Pusses With Cat Containment Fences. Maxie The Cat wants to be outdoors. It's in his nature. Being safe, outdoors, filled with the rush of stimuli flowing to him and activating his sensory palette makes Maxie happy, reduces the risk of depression and cat-scratching boredom, even may reduce the stress related indoor urinating which can rapidly escalate into a house-wide pungency and cleaning nightmare.

Free to wander at home, yet passively contained by his cat fence, Maxie is no longer at risk from aggressive neighbor dogs, roving predators, unbalanced humans along with the potential health risk of disease-riddled stray homeless cats.

Passive Cat Containment Fence Versus Electronic Cat Fence Designs. Fabric mounted cat fencing may not be 100% full proof, however this sort of cat fence does not impose any "behavioral modification" pain-or-pleasure training onto Maxie as do the wireless cat fence products. Here's the real deal on the category of electric cat fence systems: any electric fence for cats does not "hurt" when Maxie receives the "corrective" shock. However, like dogs trained via shock therapy and radio pet fence system, Maxie will learn to associate his movement as a go-no go fear of identifying "safe" zones where no shock occurs. Could an electric cat fence create a deeper, and irreversible fear and anxiety in Maxie? It's possible...so why risk it! Once "trained" via shock and fear therapy, neither Maxie nor his Wizard of Oz counterpart, Toto, can be easily un-programmed.

You goal is to make your hermit crab habitat as close to tropical environments as you can. Keep in mind, that the habitat should be already prepared when you bring your crabs home.

Substrate

The perfect substrate for a hermit crab habitat is sand or coconut fiber. They are great because they are not usually inhabited by germs. On the other hand, you should never use cedar/wood chips; it's a breeding ground for germs.

Enclosure

The recommended habitat for two medium sized crabs is a ten gallon aquarium, and thirty-five- forty gallon tanks for more/bigger crabs. Get a secure lid, because hermit crabs can escape a non-secure aquarium. Do not expose the aquarium to direct sun light, this will change the temperature and humidity levels in it, endangering your crabs.

Lighting

Special lamps are not required for your aquarium, you can use any lamp. Just keep in mind that a fifteen watt bulb fits a ten gallon aquarium. The bigger the tank, the more watts are needed. Keep a close watch at the humidity and temperature gouges when you start using your lamp, you can put your crabs in danger of overheating easily.

Humidity

Hermit crabs breathe through their gills, which need to be kept wet in order to work. If for some reason the air is too dry, your crabs will slowly die by suffocation. There should be a tropical, moist feel in you hermit crab aquarium. You need temperature of 70°-80° F and humidity of 75%-90%. The substrate in the tank has to be moistened from time to time; it should be wet enough to make holes that don't fall in. Be careful to not make it dripping wet, this is dangerous for your crab.

Cleaning

You need to clean up your hermit crab container every day, remove the leftover food, and change the water. Also, you need to strain the sand once a few months to get rid of waste. Decorations and dishes Hermit crabs are climbers in nature, so it would be wise to let them climb in their aquarium. You can get them some fake plants, climbing toys, sanitized shells. The water dishes have to be deep enough for the crab to submerge. Avoid steep dishes because it might be difficult for your crabs to get out of them, this might drown the crab. Don't forget to always have at least a few empty shells lying around in your crab container to avoid shell fights and slow growth of the crab.

Cats are naturally inquisitive animals and posses senses much more sensitive and acute than our own. It therefore makes sense that when a cat is restricted to living a life totally inside that they may find the environment somewhat boring and un-stimulating.

Without adequate stimulus within their home environment, cats can become bored, stressed animals that can then manifest it self into several destructive and unhealthy behaviour patterns. For instance a bored may become stressed, this can cause scratching of furniture, urination around the home and even excessive meowing. Some cats find solace in overeating to relive their boredom and couple that with the lack of exercise they have inside, this soon can lead to weight problems. It is important therefore that owners of indoor cats realise the extra needs of there pet and provide as much entertainment and exercise to keep their cat happy and healthy.

Providing the basics for an indoor cat is the first step towards a happy home environment. The essential items are:

Making sure that fresh water is available to them at all times.

A small amount of dry food is left for them during the day.

Separate litter trays are provided for each cat and that they are not placed near to each other or near feeding areas.

Warm comfortable clean cat beds are available.

Understanding your cats natural instincts and behaviours will help to demonstrate the kind of stimulus that needs to replicated for the cat inside their home environment. Cats are natural jumpers and climbers and enjoy being up high, so buy providing so called cat trees inside will give them this opportunity. They come in many different colour, sizes and coverings and the only consideration is how much space you have to accommodate them.

Keeping claws sharp and in good condition is also a natural cat requirement. In the wild they would use tree trunks and other rough areas to sharpen their claws, in the home environment to prevent household furniture taking the brunt of this behaviour, it is possible to buy various types of scratching posts. Some of which stand-alone, others attach to doors or the side of furniture, there are even special scratching mats available.

If you ever watch a cat outside for a period of time you will notice that they are constantly looking for something to chase, stalk or jump on. This has many purposes, it helps to keep their senses alert and sharp, it keeps them fit and lastly it is fun. By simply providing different types of toys and activities, you will be able to allow your cat to continue these natural hunting and playing skills. Balls with bells inside are great chasing toys, soft mice are great for stalking and batting and interactive toys like cat fishing rods and dangly toys are good for hunting and pouncing on. Simple cardboard boxes are also great to leave around the home, cats love to hide in them and use them as attacking places.

Many cats enjoy the scent of Catnip; it relaxes them and can send them into dream like ecstasy. It is perfectly safe and cats will moderate their use of it as required. It is available in some cat toys and sprays but one of the best ways to provide some for your pet is to grow them their own little tray of fresh catnip. It is easy to grow and will provide your cat with year round sensual entertainment.

Indoor cats are deprived of contact with other animals that they would normally come into contact outside. Sights and sounds of other animals is one of their main stimuli outside and being in a quiet home environment all day could become very lonely and boring after a while. Recently special cat videos have been made which can be left on during the day for the cat as background noise and visual motivation. They show various different types of birds and small animals scurrying about and just like a cat watching from a window, provides hours of safe entertainment.

Cats are also very intelligent animals and like us need things to occupy their minds. A good way to provide this for your cat during the day while they are alone is to hide dry kibble inside a cardboard tube which has been taped up at both ends and a few holes have been punches in the side of the tubes. This means the cat has to realise that the only way to get to the food is to push the tube around to knock the food out of the holes. Perhaps leave these tubes around the house for them to find instead of just leaving food for them in a bowl.

Indoor cats if left to their own devices may try to make their own entertainment and this could be dangerous not only for them but also your belongings. To prevents such dangers it is a good idea to ensure that their home environment is made as safe for them when left alone as possible by:

Making sure that all windows are closed

That doors are kept closed to rooms containing precious breakable items.

Make sure there are no plants around that are poisonous to cats.

Keep cables tied up and out of view

Keep curtains closed on hot sunny days to keep the rooms cool.

Sometimes things start out in the most surprising ways. Take the watch company of Casio for example. If you were asked to guess what the first product that was made by Casio, you may think it was the calculator or some other type of electronic product. You would be wrong. The Casio Company was started 1946 by Tadao Kashio. Understand that this was in Japan following World War II. The financial situation was dire in Japan at the time to say the least. When Mr. Kashio began his company, he was a fabrication engineer hoping to catch a big break.

His big break showed up in a very unique way. Tadao Kashio developed a product called the yubiwa pipe. Its design allowed it to be worn on the finger. It was used to hold a cigarette, allowing the smoker to smoke the cigarette to the filter, all while still being able to use both hands. In the impoverished Japan of the times, cigarettes were a hot commodity and the product was an overwhelming success. The yubiwa pipe is a far cry from the calculators and watches that were to follow, but it did start the company down the road to success.

Since it is obvious that Mr. Kashio was an inventive sort of man, it only took a little while for him to decide to explore different products. At the business show in Ginza, Japan in 1949, he discovered electronic calculators. With the proceeds from the sale of the yubiwa pipes, Mr. Kashio and his brothers began to experiment with making their own calculators. At the time, most calculators were run by the use of gears. With diligence and hard work, the Casio Company came out with the first calculator to use solenoids. The new type of calculator went on sale in 1954. This calculator also was the first to have the 10 digit keypad and had only one display window as opposed to the competitors' that had three.

As you well know, calculators weren't the only product manufactured by Casio. After the release of the Model 14-A calculator, many more products were designed and released to the general public. The same year as the release of the 14-A, the company also became the Casio Computer Co., Inc. This is about the time when watches from Casio first made their mark on the watch industry. Casio has been well known for the huge variety and innovation of their watches almost since the beginning of production. They were one of the first watch companies to manufacture the now famous quartz crystal watches. The quartz watches produced by Casio were available in both digital and analog styles. It is possible that the most well remembered watch produced by this company was the calculator watch. For those of you who don't remember, it featured all of the amazing time keeping capabilities of the regular Casio watches, with an added feature. It had a tiny calculator complete with miniature keypad built into the watch. During its hey day it was the bane of math teachers everywhere and the savior of every math deficient student.

Considering the calculator watch was so much fun, Casio continued to raise the bar. This company was also the first to design and produce a watch that could provide its owner with some interesting details. One such watch could display the time of many different time zones at the touch of a button. Others were equipped to give weather details like the temperature and barometric pressure. Mountain climbers of ages past particularly were fond of the version that came with a gauge to indicate the altitude. While other watch makers were stuck on the same old, same old, Casio consistently offered new and exciting variations on the classic wristwatch.

With the true gadget geeks of the world in mind, Casio came up with a watch just for them. It is the Wave Ceptors line of watches. They really outdid themselves with this one. These watches are equipped to receive radio signals that enable the watch to keep accurate time. They also are able to tell the time in different time zones, the user can set alarms and timers. This line of watches also came with an incredibly extensive user manual to provide all of the necessary instructions to the owner.

From the yubiwa pipe to the finest calculators and watches in the world, the Casio has come a long way from its humble beginnings. They continue to challenge themselves and their competitors to new higher peaks and offer the best products electronics can build.
