How To Buy Safe Toys For Children

July 19th, 2009 by admin

Toys for your Children

Buying toys for your children can be difficult because all too often toys contain small pieces, breakable parts, or have sharp edges. But there are ways to cut down on the number of unsafe toys that you bring into your home.

Educating yourself about toy safety will help you make better decisions about which toys you should let your children play with.

You should pay particular attention to baby toys as your baby can become seriously injured when playing with unsafe toys. As your child grows, they will be able to play with more toys and avoid injury. There are many different types of toys on the market today. Just because developmental toys are meant to educate and help your child learn does not mean they are safe. You should always inspect a toy after bringing it home or when you are thinking about purchasing it at the store.

Pieces that can be swallowed, packaging that can cause suffocation, and wires that stick out are not toys that you want your child to play with. Find soft toys for babies, and toys that have large pieces for toddles. Toddler toys should be put away after use especially if there are other children that could hurt themselves. Buying a toy chest will help keep clutter to a minimum.

If you are unsure about the age limit of a particular toy, you should call the toy manufacturers to see what they have to say about it. Many toys have age restrictions on the boxes, but some do not. Use your best judgment when choosing these types of toys. The same goes for bath toys and infant toys. Once you have found a toy company that manufactures safe toys for children, you should continue to purchase toys from the company until your child grows out of them. Ride on toys should always be used under supervision so that your child does not suffer any injuries.

inflatable bouncer

Other toys that involve movement include inflatable bouncer, jumpers, and other preschool toys. These toys should only be used by one child at a time and should not be used unless a parent is present. Children can fall off these toys and injure themselves.

As with most toys, you should limit the amount of time that a child can use the toy.

This will also reduce injury. Keeping your child safe is your first priority as a parent. If a toy seems unsafe, then it probably is.

Children's playhouses and toddler beds should be constructed with care using the correct tools. If a playhouse is not constructed correctly, then it could collapse and cause injury. The same goes for toddler beds. You should read all of the instructions before building these items.

How to Make an Outdoor Playhouse

July 17th, 2009 by admin

playhouse outdoorOur kids spend way too much time stuck on the couch playing video games. Isn't it about time they used their imagination instead? Building an outdoor playhouse is a great way to get them started. It doesn't take much in the way of time or materials and it's an easy project you can tackle on a Saturday.

Pretty soon your child will be pirating the Caribbean, or having a tea party. All they need to get the imagination flowing is a little bit of your time and know how. Learning how to make an outdoor playhouse only takes a few simple steps.

Choose a spot where you can keep an eye on your kids! If you just happen to build the playhouse where you can see it from the living room window they won't notice, but you'll feel safer being able to check up on them.

Kids have great imaginations, so you won't need to build anything elaborate for them to come up with all sorts of play ideas. All you need are 4 walls, a doorway, and a couple windows.

Be sure to buy lumber that isn't pressure treated! The chemicals used are toxic and could harm your children.Pick up some lumber and building supplies, break out your saw and start building.Start off with a thick layer of play box sand for the floor. Just dump a few wheelbarrows full of sand and smooth it out nice and level.

Next sink four corner posts square to each other.

Lay a long piece of wood between each post and nail them together. Be sure all your corners are square. It saves time in the long run!

Nail another long piece to the top of each section.

Add 2x4 studs to the wall every 3 feet. Be sure to frame up a window on 2 of the sides as well as a doorway.

Clad the exterior in plywood and then paint it a vibrant color.outdoor playhouseNow add the roof. A couple pieces of plywood should be all you need. It doesn't have to be fancy, let your child's imagination take over instead. Just make sure it's built high enough for them to stand up in!

A great added feature is a secret escape door. Simply cut out a small hole in the back of the playhouse. Put some hinges and latch on a piece of scrap plywood and mount it over the hole. This little added feature is one of those things that you learn how to make an outdoor playhouse fun. Let your son or daughter "discover" the secret door, they'll be thrilled and it will add a whole new dimension to their play.

Pretty simple set up isn't it? It's an easy weekend design. Now it's time for the reward. Your son or daughter can now let their imagination roam free. Of course now you have the couch back and can turn on the game, that's just an added benefit of learning how to make an outdoor playhouse.

Finding Educational Kids Web Games

July 15th, 2009 by admin

kids educational gamesWith all of the trouble and situations that kids can find on the internet nowadays, some parents are finding themselves quite hesitant in letting their children play online games.

Older kids can suddenly find themselves the target of an online predator or playing a game that their parents definitely would not approve of them participating in.

For younger children, there are kids online games that are rather educational and safe. Most of those games are safe enough for parents to walk away from their children for a few moments and know that they are playing safely online.

I have a five-year old girl who is very good when it comes to kids online games. When it comes to playing games on the internet, we are very particular the same as what we let her watch on television. Some of our favorite children’s TV stations however have good websites with kids’ online games that allow them to play with their favorite characters. Not only are those sites filled with fun and creative kids online games, but they can be more educational than watching them on the television. Quite honestly, my daughter can navigate through their websites a lot better than I can! She’s learning about how to use computers as well as whatever else the games are teaching. I have found that by letting my daughter play kids online games, she actually comprehends more than the characters are teaching or showing on the television. But of course you don’t want to use the internet as a babysitter for your kids, not all the time.

On the computer, she has to count for herself – not just count along with the voices coming through the TV speakers. There are lots of other tasks that she has to accomplish for herself. While she hasn’t gotten into the Webkinz kids online games like many other children have, I know that if she does express an interest, that is a very safe and educational site as well.

A lot of time and energy has been spent putting together online games that children can find and play safely. It certainly will be a lot more difficult for a predator to target children when playing specific kids online games. I always make sure that I check on my daughter every few moments just to make sure that all is well, she’s still having fun and to make sure that she’s not breaking my computer!

It is relatively easy to find kids online games that are educational. You can simply search a few sites on Google or any other search engines. But be cautious on letting your kids sit in front of the computer for a long period of time because they might end up being a computer genius than you are!

Wooden Toys Surpass Plastic Toys

July 13th, 2009 by admin

plastic ride on toysWhen it comes to plastic toys and wooden toys, there is more of a chance that plastic toys will be purchased. However, consumers don't seem to consider buying a wooden toy for their kid instead. In a few ways, it would be more worth the while to get.

Let's think of a few differences between the two. Plastic toys: they can break easily and the edges could harm the little children. Wooden toys, on the other hand, are more durable.

If you were to stand on a toy truck made of plastic, there is a great chance that it will break, possibly leaving sharp edges that could cut your child; and be fit only for the rubbish.

Standing on a wooden truck is more likely to result in damage to you or whoever stood on the truck though one wouldn't actually suggest it.They can be played with for years and years and still look like new. Speaking of years and years, wooden toys may provide family stories and build up fun memories in the mind. When after so many years you get to see your very old toy, as they are very durable, old memories freshen up. Wooden toys can be passed on from generation to generation. Because the design is very seldom complex, they don't date.

Here are some more reasons why wooden toys should be chosen over plastic. Many plastic toys are mechanized and do a lot on their own without the help of the kid. Wooden toys tend to be more passive, which means that the child has to become more involved and this can stimulate their imagination and be more stimulating. A more passive toy may also encourage greater problem solving skills. Another reason is wooden toys can make for a nice decoration for your home when the child outgrows them.

Wooden toys do not contain any harmful chemicals whereas plastic toys contain PVC also known as Vinyl which can be harmful to children should they ever put the toy in their mouth. Provided they are not painted with lead based paint which is only likely if it is an heirloom or if it is a cheap foreign import, wooden toys do not present any health hazard whereas plastic toys can be full of chemicals that are harmful if the child ever puts the toy in their mouth.

Wooden toys give a picture of the craftsmanship as compared to a plastic toy. Plastic toys generally do not depict any creativity by hand. Therefore, wooden toys are considered to be better than plastic toys. They bring joys and refresh memories in the future.

Learn to Invest Money: Investing Made Fun for Teenagers

July 12th, 2009 by admin

Made Fun For TeenagerIf you’re a teenager interested in making money, then this article is for you. I’ll tell you how to multiply the money you earn from your after school job with something just as fun as gambling in Las Vegas but a lot safer – the stock market.

Most people think that teenagers would be bored by the subject of investing and the stock market, especially when there are much more exciting things for teenagers to talk about such as dating, going to the movies, and hanging out with their friends. Well if you’re reading this article, then you’re one of the many teenagers that break the “teenager stereotype.”

Ok, to make sure that this article wouldn’t bore you, I sat down and discussed some rules about investing with a group of teenagers.

They helped me come up with similarities between investing and dating, so I’ve decided to tell you ten ways investing in stocks is like dating. I know you’re thinking “whatever”. But keep reading and you’ll see it’s true. Learn how to invest in stocks and you’ll also learn how to win at dating. Let’s start out by defining what exactly a stock is.

Stock – A way to own part of a company. Company stock, or shares, can be bought online through internet trading companies such as E-Trade or through an investment company. You can make money by buying shares of a company that you think will sell a lot of its product. Stocks can be as cheap as $1 a share or as expensive as $3000 for a single share. For example if you bought Apple around the time it started selling ipods, you could have bought 100 shares for about $800. At its high price this year, those same 100 shares would have been worth about $8,500, not too shabby a profit, right?

OK. Now for the Ten Ways Investing is Like Dating.

Rule One: It’s possible to get ahead sometimes by doing close to nothing.

Investing in stocks is all about getting ahead by doing close to nothing. That’s not to say you can be lazy and earn money because, from the moment you start learning, it will take you at least a couple of years before you develop enough knowledge before you will feel confident enough about putting that hard earned money from your job into the stock market. And that’s a couple of years of consistent learning. But once you develop confidence in your ability to invest and make money, your money will start making money for you even while you’re sleeping. And that’s getting ahead by doing close to nothing.

So how does this concept apply to dating? Every teenager knows that if you’re trying to get “in” with somebody that you really like, that the best thing that you can do is to get that person’s best friend to like you. Because if you do, you can count on that best friend to tell the person you like a lot of good things about you. There is nothing more valuable than that. And you’re getting ahead by doing close to nothing.

Rule Two: The more experience you have, the better you’ll become at it.

Becoming good at making money doesn’t come easy. You’ll find that in the beginning, when you buy stocks that you’ll want to take small risks as you develop your style and gain more confidence in your skill.

This is good advice when it comes to dating as well. The more experience you have with dating, the more confident you will become, and confidence is an aphrodisiac to members of the opposite sex. Not arrogance. But confidence. So in the beginning of your dating history, when asking someone out, take small risks until you build up your confidence that you have the right approach. After that, confidence is all you’ll ever need.Rule Three: If you ain’t Cassanova, don’t ever try to be. Develop your own style. It’s much more attractive.

In investing, people try to copy the styles of the best investors out there. They buy the same stocks as the people that are known to have earned millions and sometimes billions in the stock market. The problem is this often doesn’t work for the average Dick and Jane because the experts that they copy have so much money that they make tons of money if stock price goes up just a few pennies. Not so for the average Dick and Jane.Made Fun For Teenagers

It’s never that easy just to copy other people’s success. The same applies if you try to copy someone else that is popular with the opposite sex. Most times, when you try to copy someone’s style, it means your not using what you’re naturally good at.

If you were, you wouldn’t have to copy someone else. So just be yourself and don’t try hard to copy a popular boy’s or girl’s style. Because nobody likes a poser or a fake.

Rule Four: Dig below the surface and you’ll discover what’s real.

Just like with boys and girls, in investing, all that glitters is not gold. In deciding what stocks to buy, you don’t want to invest in a rapidly rising “hot”stock before really doing your homework.

If you do, the chances are that you will get burned. The price of many “hot” stocks fall just as quickly as they rise unless there is substance backing that hot streak.

Girls and guys are the same. You want to see if the “hot” guys and girls have anything more than just the genetics that their parents gave them. Is there anything beyond that beautiful face or body that gives them substance?. If you find out they have strong character, loyalty, and honor, then you’ve dug enough and you’ve got a winner. But if you dig and find nothing, then keep looking for something that’s real.

Rule Five: Sometimes you gotta find a way to discover what nobody else knows to get ahead.

The way to make money in investing is to find out about companies doing stuff that is really cool before anyone knows about it. If you had found out that Apple was coming out with the ipod several months before they started selling them and bought their stock, you could have made a lot of money.

Likewise, in dating, try to make these same types of discoveries. Discover what a girl or guy really likes before he or she tells you, and do something special for him or her based upon what you discover. If you do, you’ll definitely have one up on your competition.

The Child Playhouse: A Door to a Wonderful World

July 11th, 2009 by admin

Children's PlayhouseChild playhouses are a great retreat for your child to play and imagine. From princess castles to rocket ships, the playhouses of today are a lot different than the blanket draped over the chairs that we used when we were kids.

Child psychologists say that children need to have their own personal sanctuary—a place that they can call their own. While this doesn’t mean that they should get their own apartment (they can’t even reach the kitchen counter, much less make their own meals), they should have a place in the house where they can escape.

This is their "private space", where they feel safe and can retreat to if they need to be alone.

Why is this so important? According to child psychologists, from the age of one, children already begin coming to terms with their sense of self:

I am a separate person, different from Mommy and Daddy and the world. They start to develop their independence (even if it means saying no to everything you say). They explore their skills and test their limits, gaining satisfaction from every task they accomplish: "Look what I did!"

A room (or playhouse) of one’s own

Parents can give children a special Playhouse—literally a space that’s completely theirs, where they can close the door and pretend that they are in their own beautiful world. They can retreat to their playhouse whenever they want quiet time, even choose to nap here if they like. The fact that they have the freedom to do this anytime they please, and that this is their house and not Mommy’s or Daddy’s, gives an immeasurable boost to their self-esteem. "I have control over my world. I have a safe place to go to whenever I need to."

But playhouses are not just retreats; they are the stage for children’s wonderful imaginings. They can cart their favorite dolls and stuffed animals with them, and suddenly they’re kings and queens of their magical kingdom, or even the Mommy and Daddy of a unique family. You can even give them kitchen sets or let them "cook" with clay food (or a small box of real cereals which they can mix with plastic spoons).

Boys need playhouses, too

While houses were traditionally thought to be a girl’s toy, mainly because of they’re miniature precursor, the dollhouse, boys can enjoy them as well. Luckily there are several designs that will appeal to their tastes.

There are playhouses with circus themes (to complete the look, buy a stuffed clown and a stuffed lion). There are playhouses with sheriff themes (you can even make your child a special sheriff’s badge out of cardboard wrapped in gold tin foil). There are playhouses that are painted with rocket ship designs (you can stick glow-in-the-dark stars and moons on the ceiling, hang an astronomy on one wall, or make your own planet mobile from colored paper).

Of course, every girl will be proud to own a playhouse with a princess theme (make her a special tiara or crown and scepter, or buy a set from a toy store). This will be her castle, where she’ll hold court with her dolls and teddy bears.

And of course, there are playhouses that are unisex—made of bright colors that appeal to every child.

From bedrooms to backyards
Children's Playhouses

Some playhouses are meant to be kept indoors; the materials aren’t meant to hold up well against the weather, and the brightly painted designs might fade under the sun and rain. However, their décor can perfectly complement a themed room, and they will bring hours of indoor fun (after all, if they can’t go outside, they can still go somewhere).

However, some playhouses can be kept outside, and are made of materials that are easily wiped clean (shoes can get really muddy out in the yard!). You can even have a sleepover in them—your child will be proud to invite his friends over to his house). These are ideal for homes that have limited space, or for kids who love being outdoors.

Playhouse fun

There are many things that children can do in their playhouse. In fact, one of the benefits that they bring to tired, distracted parents is that you can let them play on their own without worrying if they’re getting into trouble—they’re safely indoors, in an easily-monitored area, and not running around at the risk of breaking things (or worse, breaking their necks). Here are just some of the playhouse activities your child can enjoy:

  • Tea parties. Let your child play host or hostess in a mini tea party with stuffed animals or friends in their playhouse. You will need a plastic tea set (or let them use plastic plates, or an inexpensive set of real plates if they’re older). Then prepare finger food like sandwiches, fruit balls, brownies or cookies. Let your child dress up as he or she would for a real party. If you will be bringing over friends, you can even print out invitations. Put your child’s playhouse address, e.g. "Jenny’s Castle, North Bedroom, 123 Green Road." For the invitation, use the same motif as the playhouse.
  • Decorating. Let your child "decorate" the playhouse with simple crafts that you can do together. Look at the playhouse theme for inspiration. For example, you can make a star-shaped picture frame to match the stars painted on the walls, or create an animal mobile with stencils or computer print outs for a circus playhouse.
  • Miniature playhouses. Your child will love making a miniature version of his or her playhouse for a favorite toy. You will need cardboard boxes, paint, a cutter to make the windows (it’s best if you do this yourself), and glue. You can buy embellishments at a scrapbook or craft’s store for the windows and doors. You can also make paper dolls for this miniature playhouse to represent different members of your family.
  • Playhouse sign. Personalize the playhouse with a special welcome mat or sign with your child’s name. You can print the letters of the name out from the computer, or use scrapbook materials for a pretty background (also try embellishments like beads and stickers). Frame or laminate the sign and hang on the door. For the welcome mat, buy a plain mat and let the child paint on it.

Outdoor Play: A Great Way for Kids to Get Outside and Use Their Imagination

July 10th, 2009 by admin

"Summer is a wonderful time of year when children can enjoy lots of fresh air and outdoor play. There is certainly no shortage of excellent activities, toys and accessories to entertain and inspire children of all ages."

Some of the favorite activities among kids include; bubbles, inflatable bouncers and play sets, kites and wind spinners, outdoor furniture, playhouses and play tents, pools and water fun, and sandboxes and beach toys.

Bubbles

Bubbles are one of those outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by babies to adults. Blowing bubbles has never had quite so many options to choose from as it does today. There are plastic bubble lawn mowers, bubble catchers, bubble vision glasses, bubble wands, bubble lights, wands for small to super huge bubbles, no spill bubble buckets, monster bubble blowers, bubble blizzards (that blow nonstop bubbles) and bubble blowers available in popular fictional characters and a myriad of colors and styles. Blowing bubbles is an inexpensive way to have hours of outdoor fun.

One of the most exciting types of play for young children involves using the wide variety of inflatable bouncers and play sets on the market. Your backyard will be the center of activity if you set up one of these wonderful toys. Inflatable bouncers can be purchased in several different sizes from large (9 feet by 9 feet by 6 feet high) able to accommodate several children to small bouncers that only hold two children. Deluxe bouncers offer a fun and safe play environment with continuous air flow for safety and puncture resistant heavy gauge vinyl. There is a wide selection of designs such as castles, popular fictional character themes, inflatable fire engines, school buses, climbing walls, inflatable cars, inflatable play centers and playhouses. Several of the inflatable toys come with soft balls included for tossing, kicking and pushing around within the structure.

Kites, wind spinners and windsocks are a wonderful way for you and your child to interact and enjoy a lovely outdoor activity. The beautiful colors, designs and sizes available will surely be remembered for years to come.

play sets on the market

Kites can be purchased in an endless array of designs to include; airplanes with spinning propellers, helicopters, birds (flamingos and parrots), sharks, dolphins, butterflies, hummingbirds, fish, dragons, cellular box kites, dolphin kites, sailboats, cellular kites, diamond kites, parasail kites and tri-planes to only name a few.

Wind spinners and windsocks come in as many designs as do the kites, in an assortment of fantastic colors and patterns.

Children can enjoy the same comfort that adults do when it comes to outdoor furniture.

Whether it be having lunch at their favorite plastic or wooden picnic table or lounging back in their adirondack chair, it’s always fun for them to be just like mom or dad.

Other adorable pieces of children’s outdoor furniture can include; playhouses (complete with doorbell and motion detector), patio sets (with umbrella, table and chairs), fabric patio chairs, plastic mushroom tables, play lemonade stands, plastic mailboxes, plastic stone benches and folding armchairs.

Playhouses provide children with hours of imaginative and pretend play. There is nothing more special to a child than having their own little imaginary home to dream and role play in. Playhouses will often be a part of backyard outdoor toys in either plastic or wooden designs with climbers and swings. Some of the plastic playhouses are available with sounds such as doorbells, phones and motion detectors. Plastic playhouses can be purchased in pirate, cottage, log cabin, mushroom house and camper styles.

Similar to playhouses, play tents are usually made with nylon or plastic and also come in a wide variety of designs and styles. The biggest difference between the two is that play tents are usually much easier to assemble, disassemble and portable if needed. Play tents are available in tunnels (for crawling through), dome play tents, lady bug tents, tents with tunnel addition, school bus, fire engine, bulldozer, playhouses, camouflage tents, popular fictional character theme tents, four tunnels joined by tent in middle, tee pees and castle tents. Fabric parachutes can also be used as tents draped over objects in the home or used for throwing up toys with children in a circle.

Playhouse

It truly feels like summer once everyone has gone for a swim. Pools offer wonderful relief from the hot weather and a refreshing way to have some fun. There are a mountain of pools and pool toys to choose from, whether it be a kiddie pool or a pool lounger there is no shortage of options. Above ground inflatable pools can be found in different sizes to accommodate the kids or the whole family. Kiddie pools are available in sunshade cover designs, popular character themes, different colors and activity pool styles. The pool toys you select will only add to the enjoyment with water guns and canons, kick boards, lifejackets, inflatable water wings, retrieval toys, rafts and loungers, inflatable sharks, tubes, inflatable basketball hoops, seat rings and beach balls to name a few.

Lastly, playing in the sand can provide both learning skills and entertainment for any child, whether it be in their backyard sandbox or at the beach. Building sandcastles and sand play is particularly helpful in teaching social skills (sharing, interacting and cooperation), cognitive skills (measuring sand and mapping out roads) and physical skills (pouring, dumping, pushing and gathering sand etc.). Sandbox kits can be purchased to set up or you can select from several designs such as; turtles, castles, water and sand tables, ladybug, dinosaur and frog sandboxes. Sandbox and beach accessories might include; wheelbarrows, pails of all sizes, rakes, shovels, molds and beach chairs.

Outdoor play is a great way for the kids to get out of the house and use their imaginations. All forms of outdoor activities easily promote well-being and physical development. Children love to play outdoors as it allows them the chance to freely explore their environment while developing muscle coordination, flexibility and motor skills while decreasing restlessness and stress. And don't forget . . . always remember to put sunscreen on your child whenever they are outside.
